Delegates of the Workshop on Capacity building & Case Studies for Poverty Alleviation through Co-operatives

The Workshop on Capacity Building and Case Studies for Poverty Alleviation through Co-operatives was held by All China Federation of Supply and Marketing Cooperatives (ACFSMC) in collaboration with ICA Asia-Pacific from December 10 to 15, 2018, in Haikou, Hainan Province, China. It brought together 32 leaders and representatives from 14 countries including China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Russia, South Africa, as well as senior officials from ICA, ICA Africa, and ICA-AP. The Workshop was to explore the role and potential of cooperatives in poverty alleviation around the globe. It featured five sessions with participants sharing their achievements in poverty alleviation, highlighting cases in tackling poverty in their countries, and exchanging experience and valuable lessons. Representatives from ACFSMC talked about their poverty alleviation efforts in three targeted counties in China, promoting poverty relief measures through the development of industries, e-commerce, science and education.

The Workshop coincided with the China (Hainan) International Tropical Products Winter Trade Fair which provided valuable opportunities for establishing trade cooperation among different cooperatives. Field trips were also organized during the Workshop to local agricultural cooperatives, giving the participants a clear idea of poverty alleviation efforts by co-operatives in China. The Workshop produced fruitful results – it provided a platform for international cooperation and exchanges, facilitated consensus among cooperators around the globe, and provided inspiration towards poverty alleviation in cooperatives.
