The ICA-AP is collaborating with the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society, the Indian institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM), the International Labour Organization’s Decent Work Team in New Delhi and its Co-operative Unit in Geneva in organizing the International Conference on Co-operatives in the Changing World of Work that aims to be a multi-faceted conference with space for research papers, expert deliberations on policies and legal frames, knowledge exchange among practitioners and entrepreneurs. A delegation representing all partners of the conference met with Dr. Thomas Issac, Minister of Finance and Coir, Kerala on 12 December 2017 in his chambers in Trivandrum, Kerala,  to apprise the government of the multi-stakeholder partnership behind the international conference and the potential this confluence of ideas on the world of work and co-operatives in addressing rights of workers and the socio-economic challenges of the 21st century including decent and full employment, skills development for youth etc. 

 

Dr. Issac as a strong advocate of the co-operative enterprise model is also the author of Democracy at Work at an Indian Industrial Co-operative – The story of Kerala Dinesh Beedi Co-operative (1998) among several other books on co-operatives and economy. The meeting resulted in the minister pledging support to the conference and the call or thematic papers as well as in deciding conference sub themes like SDG 8 on Decent Work and Employment, Frontier technologies, industry turnaround and co-operatives in the sunrise economy. The Conference is scheduled from April 29 until May 1, 2018 at the IIM in Kozhikode, Kerala, India. The Conference will also feature a ‘Co-operative Hackathon’ and invite youth participation with the aim to find technology-based solutions and ideas, in the collaborative economy space to address socio-economic issues faced particularly by developing countries in the Asia Pacific region.
