The ICA-AP Committee on Co-operative Research invites paper proposals for the 13th ICA-AP Regional Co-operative Research Conference to be held on 27th  November 2018 at Tehran, Iran

Co-operatives have sustainability in their DNA, with concern for the community as the seventh of their guiding principles. Among the examples, agricultural co-operatives work to maintain the longevity of the land where they grow crops through sustainable farming practices. Consumer co-operatives support sustainable sourcing for their products and educate consumers about responsible consumption. Housing co-operatives help ensure safe dwellings. Co-operative banks contribute to stability thanks to their proximity to their clients and provide access to finance at the local level and are widespread even in remote areas. Utility co-operatives are engaged in the transition to cleaner electricity and rural access to energy and water. Worker and social co-operatives in diverse sectors (health, communications, tourism..) aim to provide goods and services in an efficient, planet-friendly way while creating long-term, sustainable jobs.

The 13th ICA-AP Regional Assembly theme is aligned with that of the 2018 High-level Political Forum (HLPF) for Sustainable Development: "Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies". During the HLPF in July 2018, UN Member States will review progress towards achieving the following Sustainable Development Goals: 6 (clean water and sanitation), 7 (clean and affordable energy), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), 12 (responsible consumption and production) and 15 (life on land).

In the backdrop of above information, the 13th ICA-AP Regional Co-operative Research Conference will be organised on the theme of Co-operatives contribute to more sustainable and resilient societies. Under this overarching theme, the conference will address the following range of topics:

  1. Co-operatives promote sustainable consumption and production of goods and services
  2. Adaptation and mitigation strategies of co-operatives to address climate change
  3. Financial and sustainability performance of co-operatives

Theoretical analysis, strategies and practices of co-operatives, and any other form of academic inquiry related to co-operatives and sustainable and resilient societies, are welcome. One off cases or success stories are also encouraged if they are backed by methodological and/or conceptual approach.

The conference comes as an opportunity for researchers, academicians, policy-makers and key stakeholders to discuss and deliberate the need to research-promote-advocate concepts towards:

  1. an enabling legal & regulatory environment,
  2. sharing knowledge and data for replication of good practices,
  3. scaling up partnerships and working relationships especially in the context of the Agenda 2030 on Sustainable Development

The conference will produce the following outputs:

  1. Papers prepared by participants
  2. A final report of the conference
  3. Network of co-operatives that will serve to promote the outcomes of the conference
  4. Recommendations to further develop co-operative data in the context of the relevant Sustainable Development Goals
