The 12th International Cooperative Alliance-Asia and Pacific Regional Cooperative Research Conference was held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, on November 11 and 12, 2017. The Department of Management of Co-operatives at the Graduate School in Sungkonghoe University, hosted the conference.

The theme of the Conference was, Cooperatives: The key solution for Social Innovation. Rev. Dr. Lee Jeong Ku (President, Sungkonghoe University), Mr. Kim Jonguk (Vice - mayor of Seoul Political Affairs), Mr. Balu lyer (ICA-AP Regional Director) and Ms. Yun Yujin (Chair of iCOOP co-operative institute) were the key dignitaries at the opening ceremony. Prof. Sonja Novkovic, Chair of the ICA CCR and Prof. Morris Altman, University of Newcastle delivered the keynote address. Prof. Akira Kurimoto, Chair of the ICA-AP CCR gave the opening remarks while Prof. Seungkwon Jang of Sungkonghoe University introduced the participants to the conference theme.

There were 27 papers were presented in six sessions on Finance, Producers/Consumer Cooperatives

 

Youth & Education, Environment & Energy, Cooperatives & Work, and Social Service & Gender. Different awards were presented for the best papers at the conference. These included the ILO Best Paper award to Dr. D. Rajasekhar from the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC), India; Two NCUI awards for Young Researchers from India to Ms, Arunima Guha from Infomerics Valuation & Rating Pvt. Ltd. and Dr. R. Manjula from ISEC.

 

The study visits to local co-operatives on Nov 12 started with a tour to the Seoul Innovation Park followed by visits to the Jung-ro Co-operative, Yangcheon iCOOP store and Bukchon Craft Village Cooperatives. Through these visits, co-operative models that provide a sustainable way of responding to changes in the world and that enhance the democratic nature of the society were introduced.
